The Conceptual Framework of the School of Education at The College of William and Mary contains four distinct characteristics that, when combined, lead to effective educators: content expert, reflective practitioner, effective collaborator, and educational leader. Each of these areas was strengthened and built during my coursework and fieldwork during the graduate program.
    Content Expert
As a lifelong learner, I am always looking for ways to build further knowledge, which increases my expertise in all of the content areas. A visit to the Foundational Understandings page will give a brief overview of coursework that has prepared me for teaching. Not only is it my responsibility as a content expert to be committed to exploring and building knowledge, as a professional teacher I must be able to organize and transfer this knowledge to students. I have learned many theories about learning, including Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, which will help me provide more avenues for learning in the classroom.
    Reflective Practitioner
The second area I have grown tremendously through practice is becoming a reflective practitioner. Reflecting on lessons and activities as well as students' responses and my reactions to different situations helps me grow as a professional and allows me to use and implement ideas I have learned from the expertise described above and colleagues. I have already developed the important skill of reflecting in the middle of lesson to evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson and read the students to assess whether the plan needs to be altered for better results. I will continue to practice reflection in order to continually grow as a teacher, as I believe it is necessary skill in order to be an effective teacher.
    Effective Collaborator
Continuing with the elements of the Conceptual Framework, I have experienced the benefits of being an effective collaborator. While collaboration applies to life in general and is not specific to teachers, it is an important piece of the puzzle that completes schools because it benefits teachers' instruction and contributes positively to students' education. There have been many times my cooperating teachers and I have discussed having two teachers in each classroom to help share the burden of the responsibilities and have a better handle on monitoring student learning. It is this type of open and willing collaboration that will make our education system stronger, as ideas are shared, reflected on, and improved.
    Educational Leader
Finally, I have developed into an educational leader throughout my experiences in the program, and I will continue to develop as a leader in the classroom and beyond. Ways that I have provided leadership to colleagues during the past year are by sharing units and lesson plans with teachers and colleagues, such as creating an SOL Review Powerpoint for Math 6 classes that can be shared through the teacher share drive, it was mentioned that I have rejuvenated and inspired other teachers to begin planning hands-on lessons again to engage students, and I have brought knowledge of reliable and valid assessments to the field that will improve student learning. I also worked with a colleague to post a technology expert module on how to use and implement digital microscopes into the elementary classroom to the internet. In the future, I will share table of specifications with colleagues in meetings where they can be discussed properly as well as volunteer to do in-house training if necessary. With my goals as teacher to help all students, it is only natural that I want to help my colleagues reach students too in order to keep any child from falling through the cracks.
By combining these four strands of the conceptual framework in everyday practice in the field, I will be on my way to becoming an effective educator. It is through knowing the content, reflecting on lessons, collaborating with partners in the field, and taking on leadership roles that I will continually grow as a professional and stay current with best practices and other research that is continually changing the field of education.

In May 2010, I completed the graduate program at The College of William and Mary with a Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in elementary education. The coursework allowed multiple opportunities to work in the field, gaining valuable hands-on experiences. I was fortunate to gain experience in both elementary and middle school during my practica and student teaching placements in graduate school. I spent the first half of my student teaching experience in third grade with Mrs. Gina Simon at Norge Elementary School, a Title I school in Williamsburg-James City County. I finished my student teaching experience in Mrs. Karen Breen's sixth grade math classes at Berekeley Middle School, which is also a part of the Williamsburg James-City County school district. I was responsible for three Math 6 classes as well as the Pre-Algebra for Sixth Graders course.
In May 2008, I graduated with honors from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Universities, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and minors in PK-6 Mathematics and PK-6 Social Studies. I had many opportunities to work with children through internships in classrooms and volunteer tutoring work while attending Virginia Tech, and I loved every moment with the children!
I am fortunate to gain experience in both elementary and middle school during my practica and student teaching placements. I spent the first half of my student teaching placement working with Mrs. Gina Simon and an intelligent group of twenty two third graders at Norge Elementary School. Norge Elementary School is a Title I school in Williamsburg, Virginia with approximately 700 students.
After I completed student teaching at Norge, I finished my student teaching experience in Mrs. Karen Breen's sixth grade math classes at Berekeley Middle School, which is also a part of the Williamsburg James-City County school district. I was responsible for three Math 6 classes as well as the Pre-Algebra for Sixth Graders course. Between these four classes, I was responsible for 85 students of the approximate 800 students that attend. Berkeley Middle School is an exemplar school in the community with consistent statistically significant gains and high achievement scores on standardized tests.
